Middle School Youth Group (Grades 6-8)
Click here to view Faith Formation Calendars.
Our Middle School Youth Group is designed for all public, home and parochial schooled students in grades 6-8 and meets Sunday mornings from 9:00-10:15am. We will not be using the same textbook as Fr. Marquette this year. Students will be given the new catechism for youth book, YouCat, as a resource. Students will learn or reinforce the curriculum in a fun & interactive way. Each month (September – May) will be fashioned with a 4-week model:
· One week will focus on prayer in general or a special prayer or devotion (such as Liturgy of the Hours, Benediction & Adoration, Lectio Divina & Stations of the Cross).
· Another week will be devoted to a service project. This is one way in which Fr. Marquette students can earn the service hours which are required in grades 7 & 8. Some service projects will be offsite and thus, may be at a time other than our normal Sunday morning time. This will be communicated to families in advance and may require chaperones and drivers as well. These projects and the discussions surrounding them will teach students about the Spiritual & Corporal Works of Mercy and Social Justice and give them a practical application.
· Another week will be a workshop style which will cover other aspects of the curriculum (Liturgy, Sacraments, Scripture & Morality). These sessions will be also be fun and interactive and may include things such as skits, songs, games and T3 DVD based Bible studies.
· The last week of the month will be dedicated solely to our new Youth for Life group. Please refer to that link for details. Students registered for the Middle School Youth Group will automatically be contacted for participation in the Youth for Life program. Prayer for the protection of all human life from conception to natural death is a curriculum point and part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. ( CCC 2258-2262) The complete diocese curriculum can be found on the Diocese of Marquette website.
Of course, parents are the primary catechists for their children. Our middle school catechists work closely with parents in the important responsibility of catechizing and forming our youth in the faith. To help with this partnership, weekly updates are sent home and are designed to inform parents of what has been covered in the session, as well as upcoming special events. The updates also give parents a few ideas to supplement the faith topic at home, if they wish. Students are given credit and periodic “rewards” for all items completed outside of class.
We will have many needs for volunteers during the course of the year. If you would like to volunteer or have any questions regarding these programs, please feel free to contact Jenny Lochner at (w) 226-6548 x211 or middleschool@stpetercathedral.org God bless your family!
