onsignor Henry A. Buchholtz was born in
Escanaba, where his parents were pioneers from Luxemburg. He attended St.
Joseph's School in Escanaba, St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, and Mount
St. Mary's, Cincinnati before being ordained for the Diocese by Bishop Vertin on May 15, 1898. He was immediately named a pastor, serving at
Munising Sacred Heart, Ironwood St. Ambrose, and Negaunee St. Paul before
succeeding Monsignor Pinten at St. Peter Cathedral November 4, 1915.
He was pastor of St. Peter Cathedral for 29 years, longer than any other
individual. In 1922 he succeeded newly consecrated Bishop Pinten as Vicar
General and he was to serve as Administrator of the Diocese on two
occasions; in the Winter of 1922-23, between the resignation of Bishop Els
and the arrival of Bishop Nussbaum, and, between the death of Bishop
Nussbaum and the naming of Bishop Plagens, 1935-1936. He was elevated to
Monsignor in 1929 and in 1934 he attained the rank of Protonotary Apostolic.
He was also Vicar General to Bishop Plagens. He died February 13, 1945.
